Castle Dargan Golf Notes 6th October 2014

Presidents Day
A big field took to the course for Presidents Day last Sunday, where windy conditions made for a challenging day in this stroke play competition off the blue tees. The course is in magnificent condition at the moment and much credit must be given to head greenkeeper Mark Millar, and indeed to Club President Mr Dermot Fallon. And on the course, there were some mightily impressive scores at the head of the field following the days play. With 5 birdies sprinkled throughout his round, it was Jim McLoughlin (8) who took the Presidents Prize with a fantastic score of 67 nett. All the more impressive was that Jim came through the notoriously difficult finishing stretch at Castle Dargan in 1 under par for his last six holes. Niall Kearns (15) was a very close second with another great score of 68 nett. While John Treacy (10) came in third with a 71 nett.

Cup competitions
Most of the major Cup competitions are nearly completed for this year, with just the Open Fourball Cup yet to be completed. In the Darren Clarke Cup, it was an all local final this year, with Ray O Grady beating Jim McLoughlin to take the title. In the Castle Dargan Cup, Ciaran Cryan came out on top after his final match against John Treacy. While in the Council Cup it was Kevin Torsney who claimed the victory over Donal McLoughlin in their decider. The presentation of these Cups, along with the Presidents Day prizes and the 4 ball Cup, will be made at a later date in November.

We’ve had some excellent golf from the Castle Dargan ladies in recent weeks. The Competition was won by Ann Mullen with Pauline Lennon coming second and Anita Carty third. Castle Dargan Ladies Golf Update 14 September 2014

Last week proved to be the toughest week at Castle Dargan Golf Club when our dear friend, fellow golfer and 2012 Lady Captain Mary Mc Gourty passed away suddenly on Sunday 7th September. Mary was one of the founder members of Castle Dargan Ladies Golf Club and worked ceaselessly to promote both the club and the game of golf. She had a particularly good relationship with many of our sponsors, who are the life blood of the club, and she was very proud to wear the Castle Dargan crest. Mary was creative and artistic and was innovative in fundraising. She always had the interests of the club and its lady members at heart. We will miss her sadly and remember her fondly. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe, Joanne and Michelle.

Our midweek competition takes place on Wednesday next 17th Sept and is sponsored by Italian Wardrobe. Meet as usual for draw and tee off at 10.30 sharp. The weekend alternate day competition on Sat/Sun 20 & 21 Sept is kindly sponsored by M&K Oils. Carroll wins Ulster under 13 title

Sean Carroll has kept up Castle Dargan's remarkable recent run of success in junior golf, this time capturing the Ulster Boys under 13 Open title at Moyola Park Golf Club last week. Carroll, playing off 7, and who finished 4th in the Irish Open recently, carded a best of the day gross score of 75, which included a run of one under par for the final 10 holes, to clinch the title. Recently crowned Irish Open champion Patrick Callaghan finished in 4th place.

Pictured is Sean Carroll from Castle Dargan Golf Club, with the Ulster Boys Under 13 Open trophy he won at Moyola Park last week.

Sympathies

Everyone associated with Castle Dargan was in a state of shock last Sunday as the tragic news filtered through of the passing of recent Lady Captain of the Golf Club, Mary McGourty. It's difficult to find words, or to try and make sense of this at all, but it goes without saying that Mary will be hugely missed, as she has been such a hard working, friendly, and well liked member of the club, and indeed the wider community, for a long time. Our thoughts and prayers are with husband Joe, and daughters Michelle and Joanne at this terribly difficult time.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes Sunday 10th August 2014

Captains Day, Mr Dave Donovan, Sunday 3rd August 2014
After weeks of great golfing weather, the wind and rain came howling back on Sunday the 3rd of August  to make conditions extremely testing for all of the participants in Mr Dave Donovans Captains Day. The early starters were off at 7.28am, and with a strokeplay format off the championship tees to contend with, the players were facing a challenging day ahead. But Finn Conway jnr kept up some good recent form to post a hugely impressive round of nett 71 to lead the way after the first 18 holes. Finn was the only man to break par at this stage, and would take a 3 shot lead into the 9 hole playoff later on. John Scanlon who has also been showing good form of late, was in second place, with Mark Millar a further 2 shots back on 76. Gerard Tailly and Mickey Flynn were next on 77, and 15 men in total were to qualify for the playoff. But following the extra 9 holes, and despite the relentless wind and rain throughout the playoff, no-one could catch Finn jnr, who kept his nerves and his score card together to stay ahead of the chasing pack and claim the Captains prize for 2014. John Treacy put together an impressive run in the playoff to come close, but ultimately finished in second place overall. Mark Millar claimed third place, Adrian O Donoghue was fourth with Paul Mullen fifth. Ray O Grady recorded the lowest gross on the day, while Mary Kennedy won the Ladies competition, with Thomas Keavney winning the junior section.

Congratulations to Captain Dave Donovan for putting on such a great day and night at the club, despite the best efforts of the weather earlier on, as the many family and friends who attended enjoyed the golf, the dinner, the speeches and the entertainment long into the night. (See picture below)

Kenny Cup
Congratulations to the Castle Dargan Kenny Cup team of Darragh Connolly, James Fallon and Conor Burke, who brought home the clubs second pennant with a superb victory in the Connaught Final on Sunday last in Strandhill. It is the second year in a row that a junior team from our club has won this competition, beating off stiff competition from the best junior golfers in the province along the way. All the more impressive is the fact that this years team was made up of totally different players from last year, emphasising the depth of talent we have at underage level in Castle Dargan at the moment. Well done to the boys and to coaches Xavier Medas and Paul Little on this fantastic achievement.

Here's the team - Back Row L to R: Paul Little (Team Captain), Fergal Collery (Junior Captain 2014), Dave Donovan (Captain 2014), Xavier Medas (PGA Professional) Front Row L to R: Daragh Connolly, James Carroll, Conor Burke

Castle Dargan Ladies Golf Update 6 June 2014

Mrs Claire Reynolds hosted her truly memorable Lady Captain’s Day at Castle Dargan Golf Resort on Sunday 1st June. A huge turnout of members, family and friends kept the perfectly manicured golf course busy from very early morning and the fine weather gave every opportunity for good golf. The reward for all golfers was celebratory refreshments with the Lady Captain herself as we stepped off the 18th hole.  The Lady Captain’s Dinner followed that evening in Castle Dargan Hotel and it was a magnificent occasion with the many members and friends being joined by the Reynolds and Corcoran families. Dinner was delicious and the overall service is a credit to the staff at Castle Dargan Hotel. Lady Captain’s Prize was won by Kate Hegarty, 2nd Peggy Feely, 3rd Ann Mullen, 4th Annette Kearns, and 5th Joan O’Dowd. (Pictured right Castle Dargan Lady Captain Claire reynolds presenting her Lady Captain's Prize to Kate Hegarty)

Castle Dargan Golf Notes  1st June 2014

Jimmy Bruen
Our Jimmy Bruen team were beaten 3-2 by Strandhill last Monday in what was a very close match. 3 matches at home, and 2 away looked good on paper for our team, but Strandhill were to get their revenge for the Pierce Purcell defeat they suffered to us just 2 days earlier. It was great to see captain Kevin McCarthy introducing some very talented young players to our line up for this competition, and congratulations must go to Patrick Callaghan, Sean Carroll and Darragh Connolly for performing so admirably in their first outing at senior level for the club. In the home matches, Sean Carroll and Jim McLoughlin notched a fine point for Castle Dargan on the 14th green, while shortly afterwards, Patrick Callaghan and Niall Walsh also won another excellent point by winning on the 14th hole. However, Merv Keegan and Mickey Flynn came up against a birdie blitz from their opponents, who chalked up a crucial away win for the Strandhill men. Attention then turned to the seaside venue, but unfortunately, although Adrian O Donoghue and Kevin Conlon, and Kevin McCarthy and Darragh Connolly battled bravely, they couldn't prevent Strandhill taking the 2 points needed to send them through to the next round. Well done to Kevin and the team for their efforts, and best of luck to Strandhill in the next round.

Results
On Saturday, Sligo Freeze and Chill were the sponsors in this stableford event, with first place being taken by Martin Burke (19) with 38 points. In second place was Thomas Kelly (19) with 36 points. While in third place was Ray O Grady (5) also with 36 points.

On Sunday, it was Lady Captains Day, and it was great to see so many players enjoying the days golf, with the course in absolutely superb condition. And there wasn't much to choose between the top scorers in this stableford competition, with no less than 5 players level on 39 points after the days play. So with countbacks needed to separate these 5 cards, it was Benny Deignan (13) who came out on top with a very solid back nine proving the decisive factor. In second place was Declan Feeney (19), while in third place was John Hewitt (13). Well done to our Lady Captain Claire Reynolds for such a great days golf, with dinner and entertainment being enjoyed by a large crowd later on in the evening.

Important notice for Darren Clarke Cup, Castle Dargan Cup and Council Cup
