Inter Club Competitions

Hard luck to our ladies team, and the mixed foursomes team captained by Dermot Flynn and Mary Walsh, who were defeated last week, despite performing admirably in both matches. Best of luck to Bernard Kelly and his Pierce Purcell team, who take on Ballaghaderreen on Saturday next, the 25th May, and also to John Hewitt and his Seniors team, who tee it up against Carrick on Shannon on Tuesday the 21st of May.

Fixtures

Next weekends competitions are sponsored by Tindal Wines, with singles stableford competitions taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

Lady Captains Day

Our Lady Captains Day, Pauline Lennon, will be taking place on Sunday the 2nd of June. A timesheet is in operation on the day, and players are asked to book their tee time in advance. Best of luck is extended to Pauline for what will hopefully be a great day for her, and everyone else at the golf club.

ILGU Womens Interprovincials at Castle Dargan

Castle Dargan Golf Resort hosted the recent ILGU Womens Interprovincials Tournament over three days, with Leinster bidding to retain the title they won last year in Cork. The pre tournament favourites were Leinster and Ulster, who both brought very strong panels into the competition, and despite their best efforts, Munster and Connaught could not upset the form book. Following the three days of intense competition, both Leinster and Ulster finished up with 2 ½ points each, so it was down to who had won the most matches to decide the outcome. And it was Ulster with 20 matches won, who just pipped the Leinster ladies, who finished with 19 wins. ILGU President Mary McKenna MBE, congratulated Ulster as winners, and indeed all the competitors for their part in what was a very successful tournament. Mary also spoke very highly of Castle Dargan as the host venue, praising the course itself and the challenge it presented, and also the excellent condition it was in for the players and spectators to enjoy.

Captains Drive In 2013

Castle Dargan Captains Mr Tony Wasylocha and Mrs Pauline Lennon held their drive in on St Patrick’s Day in front of a very large crowd of friends and well wishers. This year the drive in was to raise money for the Sligo Cancer Support Services and thanks to all who bought markers to predict where the drives would finish. A total of €500 was raised and congratulations to Seamus O Connell and John Hewitt who each won a superb hamper on the day.
After two brilliant drives all returned to the court yard where the presentation of prizes were made to the winners of the winter leagues and other winter competitions. Lady VC Claire Reynolds and VC Dave Donovan introduced the various winners who received their prizes from Pauline and Tony.
In addressing those present Captain Tony Wasylocha thanked all those who helped make the day a very special one for him. He thanked his council and welcomed new members Chris O Neill and George Kavanagh on board. Tony acknowledged the work that the Council members put into the club and he looked forward to working with them in 2013. He thanked the loyal sponsors for continuing their support of the club and welcomed those who were with us for the first time. He acknowledged the commitment of Dermot Fallon and his wife Breege to Castle Dargan and wished them and the resort continued success for the future.
Before finishing off and wishing everybody an enjoyable evening Tony said it was important to remember those members and friends who passed away during the previous year. A special mention was made of the late Eddie Spellman who was sadly missed by all involved in the club.
Afterwards food was served to all and then the dancing started and lasted well on into the evening. It was a great evening and it was fitting that so many of the officers, members, family and friends attended and made it a special and indeed memorable day for both Tony and Pauline. (Pictured at the 2013 Captains Drive in on St Patricks Day recently at Castle Dargan Golf Club are Mens Captain Mr Tony Wasylocha and Ladies Captain Mrs Pauline Lennon)

Presentation of prizes

At the final presentations of 2012, held in December, there were prizes presented for many competitions, including the major Cups of the year. Victorious in the 3 man scramble winter league, was the family team of Ciaran, Kevin and Barry Cryan. In the Cup competitions, it was Eoin Carroll who won the Darren Clarke Cup, with Kevin Conlon regaining the Castle Dargan Cup he also won two years ago. Eugene Carroll won the Council Cup, while the pairing of John Hewitt and Jack Read took the honours in the Foley and Cawley Cup. The newly crowned King of the Castle is Dermot Flynn, while Daniel Dolan won the Golfer of the Year for 2012.

 AGM

The Castle Dargan Golf Club AGM took place last Wednesday the 9th of January and a good attendance was present on the night.  President Dermot Fallon addressed the crowd initially, followed by treasurer Alan Martin, who reported on a very good financial year for the club in 2012. Alan was congratulated on his work from the floor, before 2012 Captain Declan Feeney gave his address, and thanked all who helped to make his year such a great success. Special tribute was paid to Mark Millar, Head Greenkeeper, on his work over the year. Declan finished off his address by presenting incoming Captain Tony Wasylocha with his jacket for 2013, and wishing him all the best for the coming year. Dave Donovan was announced as Vice Captain for 2013 and George Kavanagh and Chris O Neill have both joined the golf club council.

Pictured from left to right are Declan Feeney, Castle Dargan Golf Club Captain 2012, Eugene Carroll,
Council Cup Winner, Eoin Carroll, Darren Clarke Cup Winner, and Tony Wasylocha, Castle Dargan Golf Club Captain 2013.

 Spring League

The first round of the new Spring League took place on Sunday last, with a good field braving the cold conditions to record their first cards of the competition. The format again is a 3 man scramble, with the best 3 cards to count over the 4 rounds on the 13th and 27th of January, and the 10th and 24th of February. The scoring was very tight over the first day, with little separating the early leaders. Top of the scoreboard following day 1 are Bernard Kelly, George Kavanagh and Thomas Little with a score of 37.9 points. Just behind with a score of 38.2 are two thirds of the defending champions, Barry and Ciaran Cryan, who have been joined on their team by Kevin McCarthy. And in third place on 38.3 points are Declan Feeney, Niall Kearns and Daire Kearns. Only a few points separate the rest of the field, so the next few weeks should be very interesting indeed.

In the singles competition, taking place on Saturdays, and alternate Sundays until the 7th of March, the early scoring is proving even tighter. 3 players all finished on 26 points after last Saturdays 12 holes in this competition, with a countback needed to decide that John Torsney has his nose in front, just ahead of Bernard Kelly and Tomas Kelly. The best 3 cards count over the coming weeks for this competition.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes 9th November 2012

Winter League

The final round of the winter league takes place next Sunday with all still to play for for the 23 teams involved. The best three cards out of the four Sundays will count for each team, so a good score next weekend could put anyone right in the mix for the prizes. Teams are advised to book their time beforehand with the golf shop for what is sure to be a busy day on the course.

Singles Competition

The final Saturday of the singles competition also takes place next weekend, with the best 3 cards for each player to count in this event.

Presentation evening with a visit from Santa

The final presentations of 2012 will take place next Sunday the 16th December, following the conclusion of the winter league. There will firstly be a visit from Santa Claus at 3pm for all our younger (and maybe not so young) members and guests. The prize giving will follow at 5.30pm, with a number of important presentations to be made. These include the winter league 3 ball scramble and singles events, the Darren Clarke Cup, Castle Dargan Cup, Foley and Cawley Cup, Council Cup, King of the Castle, Golfer of the Year, and competitions sponsored by Connacht Gold, Thomas Kelly and Tindal Wines. This will then be followed by music with John O Dowd, and finger food and refreshments to be enjoyed also. All members are most welcome for what should be a great evening at the club.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes 4th November 2012

Winter League

On a beautiful Sunday morning last, this years Winter League got under way at Castle Dargan, with a large field of over 20 teams taking to the course. The format for this competition, sponsored by Leitrim Chrystal, is a 3 man scramble over 4 weekends, with the best 3 cards to count for each team. And off to a flyer was the team comprising the father and son combination of Niall and Darragh Kearns, along with club captain Declan Feeney. A flawless performance over the 12 hole event included 10 pars, one birdie and a superb eagle 2 at the par four 15th hole. With the handicap taken into consideration, this left the early leaders on a nett score of 36.3. In second place early on in this competition is the team of Martin Burke, Thomas Kelly and Mark Kelly, who ended up with an excellent total of 38.3. And in third spot is John Gethins, Peter Carr and James Carroll on a score of 38.6. It must be said that after this first round, the field is very tightly bunched, so every team has plenty to play for in the coming weeks.

Singles Competition

Over next Saturday and Sunday, the singles competition continues which is running alongside the 3 man winter league. In this singles competition, players may enter cards over every Saturday up until the 16th of December, and every second Sunday where the scramble is not being played. The best 3 cards over these dates will count for each player.

Castle Dargan Notes 28th October 2012

Castle Dargan Cup

Kevin Conlon is proving himself to be a real Cup specialist, as this is now the third year in a row that he has won one of the major Cups at Castle Dargan. Following last years win in the Darren Clarke Cup, and the previous years victory in the Castle Dargan Cup, Kevin is lifting another Cup this year after winning a fantastic final played out against Collooneys Aiden McGoldrick. Both players had been seen recently at intense training camps in the sun - Aiden in Portugal, and Kevin in Spain - and all the practise certainly paid off as the golf was of an extremely high standard. Indeed its hard not to feel sorry for Aiden, as its not often one would have scored 41 points, and had a hole in one included in the round, and still finish on the losing side. However such was the quality of the match, that Kevin still overcame the challenge, sinking some superb putts along the way, and also pitching in at one stage, before draining a monster putt on 18 to secure the victory. Aiden can be very proud of his performance, including the superb ace at the third hole. But congratulations go to Kevin, as he adds his name to this prestigious trophy once again

4 majors competition
Although many people managed to call one of the major winners right, congratulations go to Anthony Wasylocha who was the only person to predict two of the 2012 major winners correctly. Anthony rightly told us that Bubba would win the Masters, and Rory would win the PGA, and so wins the cash prize in this competition.

Congrats to Xavier
Congratulations from all involved in the golf club to Xavier and Marguerite, on the birth of their new baby girl.

Captains Day  25th August 2012Captains Day Winner

Captains Day Declan Feeney (right of picture) was held at Castle Dargan on Saturday 25th August and it turned out to be a brilliant day both on and off the course. The forecasted poor weather decided to give the area a welcome reprieve and the sun shone on all who played throughout the day. The first three ball set out at 7.30 am with the first “T” remaining busy until mid afternoon. After the 18 hole qualifier it was Collooney man Michael Flynn who led the field with a nett 67 and was 4 shots ahead of a number of people on 71 including Gay Sheeran, Adrian Barrett and Paul Coughlan. Also in the mix was last year’s winner Benny Deignan, Presidents prize winner Kevin McCarthy and 2011 Presidents winner John Tracey.
As the top 15 headed off to play the 9 hole playoff, it was still all to play for and some started to feel the pressure. As the wind picked up mistakes were made and while some players made moves they just as quickly fell away again. It was not until the last card was submitted that the result was known and it was Gay Sheeran (left of picture) coming from 4 behind to win by two shots from Adrian Barrett .  Jim McLoughlin was third, Dave Donovan fourth and Michael Flynn was fifth.

Congratulations to Peter Carr who picked up a prize for nearest the pin and to John Tracey who had the lowest gross on the day.

Later that evening there was a large attendance at the Captains Dinner and all enjoyed the meal and music afterwards. A big thanks to Regan James who at short notice kept the crowd entertained into the small hours. There was a special presentation to junior member Sean Carroll on his exploits during the year where he represented Castle Dargan in an U13 competition in Scotland.

Jackson Cup

Congratulations to Castle Dargan member Kevin McCarthy on winning the Jackson Cup in Rosses Point during the past week.

Fixtures

Next weekends competitions are sponsored by Eddie Carr and Company on Saturday, and Allied Irish Bank on Sunday.

Saturday 18th August Brooks Hanley
The Brooks Hanley sponsored competitions featured a single stableford at home, while another competition took place as the Castle Dargan society visited Westport for the day. At home, it was Liam Walsh (16) who took the victory with a great score of 41 points. Liam just pipped friend and playing partner Paul Little (5) into second place, although Paul had a great score himself of 40 points. And of the away players in Westport, it was John Hewitt (!3) who continued his great form this year by taking the victory there, with Dermot Flynn (17) in second place.

Sunday 19th August  Permanent TSB
On Sunday last in the competition sponsored by Permanent TSB, it was Paul Mullen (20) who recorded his first victory of this year. And Chris O Neill (16) was back amongst the prizes as he took second place.

Captains Day
The time sheet is filling up for Captains Day, which takes place on the 25th of August. Players should book a time as soon as possible, as the draw for the pairings will take place during this week. Tickets are also on sale now for the meal and entertainment later on, which can be got in the golf shop, from hotel reception or from council members. The competition is 18 hole stroke play, with a 9 hole play off in the afternoon to decide the outcome. Best of luck to Club Captain, Mr Declan Feeney on his big day.

Junior Golf
It has been a busy few weeks for the Junior Members of Castle Dargan seeing them compete in numerous events all over the country.
Earlier in the summer a team of 5 traveled to Galway GC for the U-15 Boys Inter Club Strokeplay where the lads gave a very good account of themselves in what was very un-seasonal weather in Salthill.
Next up was the Kenny Cup held here at Castle Dargan & we had 2 teams entered in this tournament, with our ‘A’ team just missing out on qualification for the finals in 4th place.
Castle Dargan was represented by 3 of our boys in the Leinster U-13 open with Patrick Callaghan our top golfer in Royal Tara scoring 87 Gross.
We then moved on to Carrick-on-Shannon where we had 3 entries at U-17, 2 at U-15 & 10 lads playing at U-13. Eoin Carroll & Darragh McLoughlin at U-17 along with Sean Carroll & Patrick Callaghan at U-13 made the cut & went on to Oughterard for the Finals. Congratulations to Sean on finishing 3rd overall in the Finals & also Patrick in 5th !!
Next we headed North for the inaugural U-13 Ulster Open & again we had great representation with no fewer than 9 boys making the trip to Shandon Park GC in Belfast to enjoy a great days golf.
Returning to Castle Dargan we hosted the Connacht Girls Open Championship with Maeve Kelly representing the club on home soil. Maeve played some impressive golf on day 1 with rounds of 82 & 79 seeing her qualify comfortably for the final round in 4th place. A round of 88 on day 2 in the final round secured 12th place gross but was good enough for Maeve to win the Nett prize at this prestigious event, well done Maeve on an excellent performance!!
Also a big thank you to Junior Members Katie Little, Luke Sherlock, Patrick & John Callaghan, Fergal Collery, Niall Mullen & James Carroll for helping out with caddying & ball spotting on the course over the 2 days.
A reminder that the draw for the Junior Matchplay Cup is now up in the Pro-Shop & all 1st round matches must be played by Sunday 26th August.

Sunday 12th August  Club Fundraiser sponsored by Wassies Chipper and Inland Inflatables Ireland.
There was a big field entered in the annual club fundraiser last Sunday, with teams of three taking part in a scramble. The course really is in superb condition at the moment, and the many visitors who played on the day are sure to have enjoyed the days golf. Leading the field home was a team which included John Brennan, Alan Martin and Jim McLoughlin. Although John is from Tubbercurry Golf Club, he is no stranger to Castle Dargan, having enjoyed a good run in the Darren Clarke Cup earlier this year. So that experience, along with the local knowledge of Castle Dargan men Alan and Jim, lead to a brilliant score of 57.6. In second place with another great score of 58.15 was another man from Tubbercurry Golf Club, Maynard O Boyle, along with Ballymote Golf Clubs Brendan Connolly and Castle Dargans Michael Flynn. It was a valiant effort to take top spot from this team, who birdied the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th on their way home, but they were just pipped on this occasion. And in third place were the Kearins brothers of Niall, Andrew and Philip with a score of 59.3. Best ladies team on the day included Castle Dargan Lady Captain, Mary McGourty, along with Ann Carton and Kathleen Coughlan. Merv Keegan won the longest drive category, and John Brennan got nearest the pin with a great effort at the 11th.

Congratulations also to Club Captain Declan Feeney, who has recently secured a lucrative sponsorship deal with Massey Ferguson.

Sunday 29th July Noel Carr and Company
Apparently, there is no truth in the rumour that a stewards enquiry was required following last Sundays event, despite Peter Carr (24) winning the competition that just happened to be sponsored by his brother, Noel Carr and Company! Peter simply played the best golf on the day, and especially with the difficult conditions on the day, thoroughly deserved his win. In second place was John Hewitt (13) and in third place was John Sexton (23)

Saturday and Sunday 4th and 5th August         Sherlock Meats
In the single stableford re-entry event, sponsored by Sherlock Meats, and which took place over Saturday and Sunday last, it was Philip Kearins (25) who came out on top with a fine score of 37 points. John Torsney (28) was in second place with 36 points, just pipping Niall Walsh (10), also with 36 points, into third place on a countback.

He will now play the winner of the other semi final between Eoin Carroll and Stephen Smyth. In the Castle Dargan Cup, Kevin Conlon has booked his place in this years final, and he will face either Martin Burke or Aidan McGoldrick. The Foley and Cawley Cup has also reached the semi final stage, and the remaining pairings are Daniel and Jonathon Dolan versus Benny Deignan and Fergal McLoughlin, while Dean McGowan and Mark Dolan face off against John Hewitt and J Read. Again, please check the dates for completion of matches on the competition sheets in the golf shop and ensure fixtures are played by the relevant date.

Connaught Shield
Our Connaught Shield team, captained by Tony Wasylocha bowed out last week to a very strong Castlerea team. The luck of the draw has not been with Castle Dargan this year, as we were drawn to play away from home in almost all our inter club matches, and with three matches again away in Castlerea this time, the 2010 champions went through after a hard fought victory.

Friends and Family Day - Sat 28th July

An enjoyable day was had last Saturday, despite the weather, for the Friends and Family Day, which involved a two ball scramble. The competition was won by father and son combination, John and Joseph Gethins. There was food afterwards for the competitors, and music was provided by Mairead Keane.

And Gay Sheeran (12) finished in third place with 38 points.

Sunday 22nd July Embassy Stroke (Golfer of the Year)
Despite the forecasts leading up to the weekend, the sun was conspicuous by its absence on Sunday last in Castle Dargan, and the players had to contend with very windy conditions for this Golfer of the Year event. However, continuing his great form of late, TJ Keaveney (24) notched his fourth win this year alone, when he got the better of the conditions and recorded a great score of 70 nett. Castle Dargan Notes  9th July 2012

Pierce Purcell Team
Our Pierce Purcell Team were beaten by Tubbercurry in the Zone Final last Saturday. With three matches away from home, it was always going to be difficult to progress, but the match proved to be a very tight affair in the end. Dave Donovan and Paul McGonagle took their opponents to the 17th in Tubbercurry before the home team took the point. And Alan Martyn and Benny Deignan could do nothing to halt their opponents in their match. But John Hewitt and Adrian Barrett took a great point away from home to keep the interest going at home. In Castle Dargan, Kevin Conlon and Mark Dolan were involved in a tough battle, and despite being three down with three to play, they just missed out on a putt to square the match on the 18th and take it to extra holes. So despite being one up in their match on the 15th, Michael Flynn and Niall Walsh were called in, as the overall result had been decided. Best of luck to Tubbercurry in the Connaught semi final. And well done to captain, Ray O Grady and all the team for their efforts.

Lady Captains Day Saturday 7th July
Lady Captains Day (Mary McGourty) took place last Saturday 7th July.
