Castle Dargan Ladies Golf Update 6 June 2014

Mrs Claire Reynolds hosted her truly memorable Lady Captain’s Day at Castle Dargan Golf Resort on Sunday 1st June. A huge turnout of members, family and friends kept the perfectly manicured golf course busy from very early morning and the fine weather gave every opportunity for good golf. The reward for all golfers was celebratory refreshments with the Lady Captain herself as we stepped off the 18th hole.  The Lady Captain’s Dinner followed that evening in Castle Dargan Hotel and it was a magnificent occasion with the many members and friends being joined by the Reynolds and Corcoran families. Dinner was delicious and the overall service is a credit to the staff at Castle Dargan Hotel. Lady Captain’s Prize was won by Kate Hegarty, 2nd Peggy Feely, 3rd Ann Mullen, 4th Annette Kearns, and 5th Joan O’Dowd. (Pictured right Castle Dargan Lady Captain Claire reynolds presenting her Lady Captain's Prize to Kate Hegarty)

Castle Dargan Golf Notes  1st June 2014

Jimmy Bruen
Our Jimmy Bruen team were beaten 3-2 by Strandhill last Monday in what was a very close match. 3 matches at home, and 2 away looked good on paper for our team, but Strandhill were to get their revenge for the Pierce Purcell defeat they suffered to us just 2 days earlier. It was great to see captain Kevin McCarthy introducing some very talented young players to our line up for this competition, and congratulations must go to Patrick Callaghan, Sean Carroll and Darragh Connolly for performing so admirably in their first outing at senior level for the club. In the home matches, Sean Carroll and Jim McLoughlin notched a fine point for Castle Dargan on the 14th green, while shortly afterwards, Patrick Callaghan and Niall Walsh also won another excellent point by winning on the 14th hole. However, Merv Keegan and Mickey Flynn came up against a birdie blitz from their opponents, who chalked up a crucial away win for the Strandhill men. Attention then turned to the seaside venue, but unfortunately, although Adrian O Donoghue and Kevin Conlon, and Kevin McCarthy and Darragh Connolly battled bravely, they couldn't prevent Strandhill taking the 2 points needed to send them through to the next round. Well done to Kevin and the team for their efforts, and best of luck to Strandhill in the next round.

Results
On Saturday, Sligo Freeze and Chill were the sponsors in this stableford event, with first place being taken by Martin Burke (19) with 38 points. In second place was Thomas Kelly (19) with 36 points. While in third place was Ray O Grady (5) also with 36 points.

On Sunday, it was Lady Captains Day, and it was great to see so many players enjoying the days golf, with the course in absolutely superb condition. And there wasn't much to choose between the top scorers in this stableford competition, with no less than 5 players level on 39 points after the days play. So with countbacks needed to separate these 5 cards, it was Benny Deignan (13) who came out on top with a very solid back nine proving the decisive factor. In second place was Declan Feeney (19), while in third place was John Hewitt (13). Well done to our Lady Captain Claire Reynolds for such a great days golf, with dinner and entertainment being enjoyed by a large crowd later on in the evening.

Important notice for Darren Clarke Cup, Castle Dargan Cup and Council Cup
Players in all of these Cup competitions should note that the date for completion of the current round of matches is June 22nd. Please contact your opponents and ensure your matches are played by this date, in order to keep the competitions running on schedule. Unfortunately, players who fail to get these matches played on time may risk forfeiting the match. The draw sheets with names and contact details of all players are available from the golf shop. Thank you for your co-operation.

Fixtures
Next weekend sees Sligo Golf Academy sponsor the singles stableford competition on Saturday 7th June. While on Sunday 8th June, it's a strokeplay Golfer of the Year event sponsored by Clifford Electrical.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes  25th May 2014

Pierce Purcell Shield
Our Pierce Purcell team, under the guidance of Paul McGonagle, earned a tremendous win against Strandhill last Saturday. With 3 matches being played away it was always going to be a tough ask, but crucially, 2 of the matches played in Strandhill were taken by Castle Dargan to ensure victory, and another tough fixture against Enniscrone in the next round on June 6th. Michael Flynn and Benny Deignan took our first point of the day as they started strong, and never really looked in any danger, eventually closing out the match on the 14th. While in the other home match, Alan Martin and Mark Reilly were involved in a really tight game, eventually losing out on the 19th hole. At the away venue, John Hewitt and Tony Ballantine were unfortunate to lose out to a strong home pairing. But Ciaran Cryan and Adrian Walls put in a great performance to come back from 3 down after 3, and take the point on a 3 & 2 scoreline. While in the last match, the experienced paring of Dave Donovan and Declan Feeney battled back from 3 down on the 13th to take their match to extra holes, and put Castle Dargan through with a victory on the 19th hole. Best of luck to Paul and the team in the next round.

Results
On Saturday, Jim McLoughlin (8) took the win with a score of 38 points, while on Sunday last, 1 Stop Motor Shop were the sponsors for the stableford event, which saw Peter Carr (23) win with an excellent 38 points. In second place was John Treacy (10) with 36 points, while in third place was Colm McTiernan (26), who also had 36 points.

Fixtures
Next weekend sees Sligo Freeze and Chill sponsor the singles stableford competition on Saturday. While on Sunday, it's a strokeplay event for Claire Reynolds Lady Captains Day. And best of luck to Claire for her big day. Darren Clarke Cup Qualifying rounds for the knockout stages of the Darren Clarke Cup took place last weekend in beautiful weather and with the course in fantastic condition. And the scoring was extremely hot at times, with Ray O Grady (5) posting a scorching round of 3 under par 69 gross, or 64 nett. Ray's brilliant round included an eagle 3 at the 10th hole, and 5 further birdies on the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 15th and 17th to head the list of qualifiers going in to the knockout stages. Other notable qualifying rounds included a nett 66 from Paul Little (5), another nett 66 from Aiden McGoldrick (17), and nett 69's posted by Finn Conway (17) and Fergal Collery (14). And while the remaining qualifiers would doubtless be hoping to avoid these leading qualifiers, the full draw threw out some very interesting pairings as follows -

Ray O Grady v Kevin Conlon
Aiden McGoldrick v Damien Gibbons
Fergal Collery v John Gilmartin
Johnathon Conlon v Vincent Dwyer
Gerard Tailly v Randal Cross
Martin Burke v Tony Wasylocha
David Lyndsay v Shane Under wood
Merv Keegan v Vincent McGee
Paul Little v Paul Mullen
Finn Conway v Peter Mc Donnell
James Carroll v John Brophy
Neill Stafford v Jim McLoughlin
AJ Hession v Dessie Timbs
Eoin Carroll v Benny Deignan
John Brennan v Liam Walsh
Adrian O Donoghue v Shane Flaherty

Contact numbers for opponents are available from the golf shop and qualifiers are asked to arrange their matches as soon as possible.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes  20th April 2014

Good Friday Scramble
Our annual 3 ball scramble which takes place every Good Friday proved to be another huge success this year, with 35 teams taking part and enjoying the current great spell of weather. The course is in fantastic condition at the moment and is continuing to go from strength to strength every year. With such a large number taking part, and attracting visitors from many our neighbouring courses, the competition was always going to be tough, and following the days play, it was the three players with considerable local knowledge who headed the field. Steven Smith, Ray O Grady and Kevin Conlon were the victors, ending up with a superb score of 57 nett. Michael Flynn, Benny Connolly and Maynard O Boyle came in just behind in second place with 57.8 nett. It was an all family affair in third place with local member Merv Keegan being joined by his parents Oliver and Mary Keegan from Longford Golf Club on a score of 59 nett. In fourth place with 60 nett was Kevin McCarthy, Jim Mc Loughlin and Paul McGonagle. And in fifth place on 60.3 nett it was David Lindsay, Gary Lindsay and another Strandhill member who's very familiar with Castle Dargan - current Darren Clarke Cup holder Dessie Timbs.

In the ladies section Anita Carty, Marie Leydon and Pauline Lennon took the spoils. And Anita also took the prize for nearest the pin, with Ann Mullen winning the longest drive. While in the mens section, Stevie Smith smashed his way to the longest drive award, with Chris O Neill proving the most accurate in the nearest the pin competition. Many thanks must go to our sponsor and a great friend of the golf club at Castle Dargan, Leitrim Chrystal, as there were some very happy winners going home with their beautiful prizes after the presentations were completed.

Many thanks also to all of the visitors and teams who participated on the day and made it once again such an enjoyable event in the golfing calendar. Castle Dargan looks forward to seeing you back on the fairways again in the very near future.

Darren Clarke Cup Qualifier
The full results from the qualifying rounds of the Darren Clarke Cup will appear in next weeks notes, along with the draw for the knockout stages. While the qualifiers for the Castle Dargan Cup take place for members over the coming weekend.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes 14th April 2014

Results
Saturday 12th April  Club Competition
Ciaran Cryan is becoming something of a Saturday specialist after notching his second Saturday victory in a row, this time with an excellent 39 points.

Sunday 13th April  Anderco Safety (Golfer of the Year)
A good field took to the course for the first Strokeplay Golfer of the Year event last Sunday. And it was Adrian Walls (17) who emerged the victor after a very close fought event, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd having to be separated by a countback. While the course is in excellent condition ahead of the busy Easter weekend coming up, the strong winds made things difficult for the golfers, with the long par 4's at 8, 14, 17 and 18 becoming difficult to reach in two for all but the biggest of hitters. However, Adrian played very steady golf throughout the day to record an excellent score of 71 nett and take the title. John Torsney (26) matched the score with another super 71 nett, but was pipped on the countback on the back nine. And while Stevie Smith (7) no doubt enjoyed the opening 17 holes of his return to the fairways at Castle Dargan, he will probably want to forget about the 18th, having stood on the tee box at just 2 over par. However, he will have to console himself with 3rd place on the podium on this occasion, after finishing with another 71 nett.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes  7th April 2014

Results
Saturday 5th April  Club Competition
On Saturday, the winner of the club competition, and continuing his great form from last year, was Ciaran Cryan

Sunday 6th April  Supervalue Ballisadare
Andrew Kearns is the man in form at the moment, as he notched up his second competition victory in as many weeks with a very impressive 40 points on Sunday last. This performance looks all the more impressive when you consider it came after banking his first victory of the year last week with 42 points, and subsequently being cut 2 ½ shots. In second place was James Kearns, who also posted a second consecutive podium finish this week with 37 points. And in third place was James Davey, who put together a superb front nine score of 24 points. While he mightn’t have been able to maintain this scoring rate for the remainder of the round, finishing with 35 points, we should still expect to see plenty more from James this year.
