Our juniors lost out last weekend to a strong Claremorris team in the Fred Daly Plate. Patrick Callaghan won his match in Castle Dargan, and the team performed and represented the club really well on the day, but they just couldn’t overcome a much more experienced Claremorris outfit. However, this is still a very young team and they will many more good days at the club in the coming years.

Winter League
The final qualifying round of the winter league took place last Sunday, and all the qualifiers for the A final are now known. Those who did not make the cut will still be eligible to play in the B final, so there is still something to play for. Both finals will take place on March 25th, and further details appear below.

Section A
In the crucial match of round 9 in Section A, Niall and Andy Kearins came out on top in a very tight match with Paul McGonagle and Colin Diamond. Their win, which was only decided on the 18th, meant they ended up topping the group, but this section is so tight, they would have been involved in a countback to qualify had they lost. The brothers finished on 19 points, with Tony Wasylocha / Paul Coughlan and Dermot Flynn / John Hewitt just behind on 18 points, while Brian Travers / Kevin Torsney pipped Paul and Colin to the last qualifying spot with 16 points.

Section B
Section B also saw a vital match take place last weekend, with David Kennedy / Peter Carr taking the 3 points against the Cryan brothers. Although both pairings finished with 15 points, this result meant Kennedy / Carr take the final qualifying spot in this section. Topping the group on 19 points is Declan Feeney / Damien McGoldrick, with Niall Walsh / Michael Flynn and Eoin Carroll / Mark Kelly just behind on 18 points each.

Section C
In Section C, two pairings finished level at the top, with Merv Keegan / Nils Niemeyer and James Fallon / David Scanlon level on 18 points each. Taking the remaining two qualifying spots for the A final are Martin Burke / Thomas Kelly and Kevin Conlon / Dave Donovan who both finished with 15 points each.

Winter League
The penultimate qualifying round of the winter league took place last Sunday with the qualifying places beginning to take shape. There are still some crunch matches to take place next Sunday so an interesting days golf should be in store.

Section A
In Section A Dermot Flynn / John Hewitt have booked their place in the final and have completed their qualifying matches with a total of 18 points, as they have a bye next Sunday. Niall / Andy Kearins are next on 16 points, with Tony Wasylocha / Paul Coughlan and Paul McGonagle / Colin Diamond on 15 points and Brian Travers / Kevin Torsney on 13 points. Looking at the fixtures for next Sunday, Niall / Andy face Paul / Colin in what could turn out to be a crucial match.

Section B
In another extremely tight group, Declan Feeney / Damien McGoldrick have taken over top spot on 16 points after a great win over the Cryan brothers. However, Kieran and Kevin are still right in the mix on 15 points, and also on 15 points are Niall Walsh / Mickey Flynn and Eoin Carroll / Mark Kelly. Indeed Eoin and Mark beat Niall and Mickey last Sunday with a great score of 7 up. David Kennedy / Peter Carr are the other team in contention here on 12 points, and they face off against the Cryans next Sunday in what looks like the tie of the round in this group.

Section C
In Section C, the top 4 places are looking like they will progress to the final with Martin Burke / Thomas Kelly in front on 18 points, James Fallon / D Scanlon on 15 points, and the pairings of Merv Keegan / Nils Niemeyer and Fergal / John Torsney on 12 points.

Castle Dargan Notes  Monday 20th February 2012

Winter League
Round 7 of the winter league took place over the last weekend, and with only 2 more rounds to go, the battle for the final qualifying placings is hotting up.

Section A
In Section A, things are very tight with Dermot Flynn / John Hewitt, Tony Wasylocha / Paul Coughlan, Brian Travers / Kevin Torsney, Niall and Andy Kearns, Paul McGonagle / Colin Diamond and Joe McGourty / John Scanlon all still with a chance of grabbing one of the four qualifying spots.

Section B
Section B seems to becoming down to 5 teams fighting it out for the 4 final places. Leading with 15 points are Ciaran / Kevin Cryan and Michael Flynn / Niall Walsh. Just behind on 13 points are Damien McGoldrick / Declan Feeney, with David Kennedy / Peter Carr and Eoin Carroll / Mark Kelly just a point further back on 12. And during their match on Sunday, Eoin came very close to being the first person to make an albatross on the par four 15th when he hit the flagstick with his drive. (I wont tell you if he made the eagle putt or not.)

Section C
Section C sees six pairings still with hopes of qualifying for the final. Fergus and John Torsney, Merv Keegan / Nils Niemeyer, Martin Burke / Thomas Kelly, James Fallon / D Scanlon, Kevin Conlon / Dave Donovan and Mark White / Harry Clancy have all still to play for in this group.

Junior Winter League
The final round of the Junior Winter League was played last Thursday & it was Tomas Little & Sean Carroll who took the title with another good win in what was a close match with the league runners-up Thomas Keaveney & Darragh Connolly.
Well done to Tomas & Sean who finished on 20 points after completing a clean sweep of 5 wins out of 5. Congrats also to Thomas & Darragh finishing in 2nd with a credible 13 points. Tied for 3rd place on 10 points were the pairings of Daire Kearns/Aaron Keaveney & Patrick Callaghan/Fergal Colleary, closely followed on 9 points by Conor Burke/James Carroll & Luke Sherlock/Conor Carroll.
There will be a number of one off Junior competitions over the next few weeks until the new season starts in April & then there will be qualifying comps running every week throughout the year.

Bonus Ball
Keep an eye out for the new Bonus Ball competition available to enter in the Golf Shop from next weekend on. Good luck to those who enter.

And remember…..
If you’re having difficulty on the greens lately and are thinking of getting a new flat stick, it’s probably not the putter……..it’s more likely the puttee!!!

Monday 21st November 2011

The second round of the winter league took place last weekend and the next round is scheduled for Saturday 4th Dec. A round up of the results to date will be included in next week’s notes.  There is a club trip organised to Castlebar golf course for next Saturday. The cost of a round of golf and a meal is €30. Places are limited and can be booked by contacting the Hon Secretary Eugene Carroll or the golf shop.  There will be a mixed scramble on Sunday and a time sheet is in operation.  The final of both the Council Cup and the Foley and Cawley Cup are due to be played in the next week or two. In the Council Cup the in form Paul Coughlan who recently was crowned King of the Castle takes on the steady Vincent Melvin while in the Foley and Cawley the pairing of Dermott Flynn/Ray O Grady take on last years winners Eoin Carroll/Mark Kelly in what should be a very close encounter.  There will be a presentation of prizes this Friday starting at 9pm. We look forward to welcoming all winners and sponsors to our second last presentation night of the year.  Just to let you know that Santa will be coming to Castle Dargan on Sunday 18th Dec. The presentation of the various cup competitions, G.O.Y. the Christmas Hampers and the new title of King of the Castle will all be handed out on the evening of the 18th. There will be some music and finger food to celebrate another successful year. More information will follow closer to the time.  Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Mary Conboy (nee Flannery) Ballymote who passed away last week.

Monday 7th November 2011

Club Competitions. The first King of the Castle competition was held during the recent October Bank Holiday weekend. With only club competition winners eligible to play there was a fair degree of good natured banter and more than a fair degree of determination evident as they teed off in their efforts to become “King of the Castle”. In the end it was Mr Paul Coughlan, who decided against giving his new set of irons their first outing, who claimed the title for 2011. Paul carded a brilliant score of 41pts to leave the rest of the field battling for second place only. In coming vice Captain Tony Wasylocha was second on 35 pts with Eoin Carroll third after a count back.

Last weekends competition was a re entry sponsored by Tindal Wines and with the sunshine making a welcome if not belated visit to Castle Dargan a large number of members entered over the two days. When cards were sorted it was Kevin Cryan who claimed his first win of the season when he returned a brilliant score of 43pts. Kevin finished 5 shots ahead of Kevin Conlon (38pts) while Thomas Kelly was third on 37pts.

Winter League. The first round of the winter league is due to take place on Sunday next 13th Nov. The cost of entry is €20 per person and will be played over 12 holes, 1 to 8 and 15 to 18.The fixtures list is posted in the golf shop and we wish all taking part the very best of luck.

Cup Competitions. Congratulations to Kevin Conlon who defeated Jim McLoughlin in the final of the Darren Clarke Cup. In what was a very closely contested match, Kevin just managed to see Jim off on the 17th.

Although the remaining competitions are well up to date we would ask all those left in both the Council cup and the Castle Dargan Cup to check the fixtures and get their matches completed by 13th Nov or they will be forfeited.  The golf shop can be contacted on 071 91 18080 or golf@castledargan.com

The weekend of Saturday 1st and Sunday 2ndof October was a re entry competition sponsored by Martin Dolan. The winner after the two days cards were checked was Raymond Barlow (26) with a score of 39 points. This was Raymonds first win at Castle Dargan and his win was thouroughly deserved. John Torsney (27) was second with 38 pts beating Conor Mc Keon (25) after a countback.

Last Saturday the club competition was won by Paul Little (9) with an excellent score of 43 pts. Paul was only two over for his round which under the conditions must have been one of his best around Castle Dargan. Paul finished ahead of Alan Martin (17) who finished on a creditable 38 pts with Liam Walsh (19) third after a countback.

Sunday's competition sponsored by Expert Hair Care was won by John Torsney (27) who finished one point ahead of Eugene Carroll (19) with Conor McKeon (23) a further two points back.

Next Saturdays competition is single stableford and is sponsored by Connacht Asphalt while Sunday's is another single stableford competition sponsored by Langan Dental Lab.

Thanks to those sponsors and members who attended the presentation night on Friday last. There was a large turn out and an enjoyable night was had by all.
The Winter League will start on Sunday 6th Nov. All interested in playing must get their name on the fixtures sheet by Sunday next 16th Oct. Those hardy souls who travelled on the golf trip to Galway had a great weekend and more importantly all arrived home safely. They all enjoyed both the golf at Galway Bay golf club and the hospitality that Galway has to offer. Thanks to all at the Galway Bay golf club and the Oranmore Lodge Hotel for making it an excellent trip.

Monday 26th, September 2011

Last weekends competitions were sponsored by the Embassy and both competitions attracted large entries and again it was great to see some new faces in the top three on both days.

Saturday’s single stableford event was won by Paul Coughlan (21) who had a score of 37pts beating Martin Burke (19) into second while Ciaran Cryan (20) was third a further point back.

On Sunday the GOY stroke play competition was won by Brian Travers (25) with a nett score of 73 while playing partner Fergus Torsney (26) was second two shots behind Brian. Michael Flynn (16) was third with a nett score of 76.

Next Saturday sees Martin Dolan sponsoring a single stableford event with a re entry for Sunday.
Cup Competitions. The final of the Darren Clarke Cup will be contested this year by Kevin Conlon and Jim McLoughlin. Both men have been in consistently good form over the year and no doubt it will be a final worth following. The Foley and Cawley competition is at the semi final stage with last years winning pair of Eoin Carroll and Mark Kelly playing Donal Carroll and James Fallon. The second semi final will be contested by the Dermott Flynn/Ray O Grady and the big hitting Tony Wasylocha and John Hewitt.

We would ask those involved in the Castle Dargan Cup and the Council cup to have their outstanding matches completed by Sunday week 9th Oct as the dates for the final are set for the  23rd and 30th respectively. Those not played will be forfeited as has already happened.

Club Trip. The club trip is on this coming weekend with Galway Bay golf club the selected venue. The cost of a round of golf plus evening meal and B&B in the 4* Oranmore Lodge comes in at an unbelievable price of €90. There is a list posted in the golf shop and any body interested should contact those in the golf shop for further details.

Winter League. The list is posted for teams for the 20011/12 Winter League. The league will be played over 12 holes a format which suited the majority of members playing in last years competition. It will be a match play format with full handicaps to count. Teams should be submitted as soon as possible to allow for groups etc to be organised. The dates for the competition are Sunday 6th & 20th Nov, Sunday 4th & 18th Dec. After Christmas the dates are Sunday Jan 22nd, Sunday 5th & 19th Feb with the last round being played on 4th March. The final will be played on Sunday 11th March. Cost of entry will be €40 per team.

Sympathy. The members of Castle Dargan golf club would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Sean Ross Captain of Ballymote Golf Club and to his family and relations on the sudden death of his wife over the weekend.

Last weekend was sponsored by Connacht Gold and although weather conditions were at times extreme there were still plenty of die hard members who played over the two days. On Saturday the stroke play competition was won by Benny Deignan (16) who finished with a nett 72 to beat Dermott Flynn (17) into second place while P Coughlan (21) was third.

On Sunday Mr Colm McTiernan (26) who recently finished fourth in the Presidents prize continued his fine form with his first win in his short golfing career. Colm beat Paul Mullen (20) after a count back while Liam Walsh (19) was in third place.

A special mention must go to junior
