Castle Dargan Golf Notes – 9th Feb 2015

Wassie’s Chipper Winter League
The final round of the Winter League was played out over the weekend, with the large field enjoying the course in great condition. And following the 8 weeks of competition, it was the team of Benny Deignan, Mick Conroy, Paul McGonigle and Seamus O Connell who kept their noses in front to take the title of Winter League Champions. It was a terrifically consistent display from the team, who kept their high scoring up every week, and weeks 6, 7 and 8 in particular proving crucial. The team posted the best team scores on weeks 6 and 7, and only one team bettered their total by one point on the final weekend. Benny Deignan was in terrific form throughout the event, posting three 25 point tallies, and two 24’s. Mick Conroy also scored heavily, contributing the highest individual score on any weekend with a fantastic 27 points on week 3, and also adding a 26 and a 25. Paul McGonigle was very consistent, and came in over the last 3 weekends with crucial scores when 3 cards were counting for each team. And Seamus O Connell really delivered for his team, particularly on the last week where he contributed his own best score of the competition to ensure his team stayed in front. 406 points ended up being the winning total, and closest to that tally with 399 points was the team of Chris Kilcullen, Aiden McGoldrick, Paul Coughlan and John Sexton. Again consistency was key to this team, with most of their scores being in the 20’s, and the team scoring heavily over the last 3 weekends. In third place with a total score of 395 points, was the team of Darragh Connolly, Mick O Hara, Alan Taffe and Fergus Torsney, and although they posted the best team score on the last weekend, it was just not enough to muscle their way into the top two positions. Well done to all the teams involved, which included members and non-members alike. And the prize giving for this event, kindly sponsored by Wassie’s Chipper, will take place following the Captains Drive in on March 17th.

Castle Dargan Ladies Update 1 February 2015

The Aurivo Winter League is moving forward nicely. A single play-off on next weekend of 7/8 February will decide the final four teams for the Second Leg and the draw sheet is posted on the Notice Board in the Golf Shop. Arrange tee times with opponents and golf shop.
Our twice weekly 9 Hole Club competitions will continue on Wednesdays and at weekends. Meet for the draw for our midweek competition at 10.20 on Wednesday and have coffee afterwards in the Middleton Bar. Book tee times and arrange partners for the alternate day weekend competition on Saturday and Sunday next, 7/8 February.
Our PGA Professional Xavier Medas in conjunction with the ILGU will run a Taster Day for Under 12 Girls at Castle Dargan Golf Club on Saturday 21 February 2015. The aim of this initiative is to give young girls the opportunity to try their hand at golf in a friendly fun atmosphere. Castle Dargan Ladies Golf Club, in association with Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit Trust (SHOUT), will hold a Table Quiz at Castle Dargan Hotel on Friday 27th February 2015. We ask all members to try and bring together a table of 4 family and friends for what we expect will be a very enjoyable night.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes - 26/01/2015

Winter League

The leading individual scorer over the second last weekend of the Wassie's Chipper Winter League was Andy Kearns with a very impressive 26 points. Michael Conroy and Kevin Conlon were just behind with 25 points each, while Benny Deignan, Ronnie Conlon, Paul Coughlan, John Treacy and Mickey Beatty all contributed 24 points to their teams. Only one weekend remains, so it is vital that all teams get all their players out on the course, as every score could prove crucial.

AGM

The AGM of Castle Dargan Golf Club was held last Tuesday the 20th of January with a good attendance present on the night. President Dermot Fallon addressed the crowd initially, followed by treasurer Alan Martin, who reported on a very good financial year for the club in 2014. Alan was thanked for his excellent work as treasurer as he steps down this year, with Kevin McCarthy taking over his position for 2015. Captain Dave Donovan gave his address, and thanked all who helped to make his year such a great success. Special mention was given by Dave, and by Dermot earlier, for those who lost loved ones during the year. Dave finished off his address by presenting incoming Captain Kevin Conlon with his jacket for 2015, and wishing him all the best for the coming year. Castle Dargan Golf Notes – 12th Jan 2015

Wassie’s Chipper Winter League
The Winter League continued last weekend with the competition hotting up now, and 3 scores to count from each team for last weekend and the last two rounds also. Remember, each team member must contribute a minimum of 3 cards to their teams total over the 8 weeks of the competition, so make sure all players post a score each week, as it could be very important.

Top scorers last weekend were the team of Benny Deignan, Mick Conroy, Paul McGonagle and Seamus O Connell with an impressive 65 points, but as mentioned, scores may change after the final week to accommodate the 3 scores required from each player, so even for those teams off the pace just now, it’s still all to play for. Next in the scoring stakes last weekend were Darragh Connolly, Mick O Hara, Alan Taffe and Fergus Torsney with 59 points, while there were 3 teams that posted 58 points – Ray O Grady, Fergal Kelly, Adrian McGoldrick and Gerry Teague / Fergal Collery, Dave Donovan, Donal McLoughlin and Micky Beatty / Chris Kilcullen, Aiden McGoldrick, Paul Coughlan and John Sexton.

Club AGM
The AGM of Castle Dargan Golf Club will take place on Tuesday 13th January in the Coach House room, Castle Dargan, at 8.30pm. All members are invited to attend.

On Friday night last, the 28th of November, the final prize-giving night of the year took place in Castle Dargan with a huge crowd attending and enjoying a beautiful meal before the presentations were made.

Special mention must go in particular to Club President Mr Dermot Fallon, as he was thanked by many for his continued investment in the club and it’s facilities, which will shortly include a new driving range. The club, the course, and it’s facilities are going from strength to strength, and we look forward to further improvements and successes in 2015 and beyond.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes – 24th November 2014

Wassie’s Chipper Winter League
Things are tight at the top of the league table in the early stages of this years Winter League sponsored by Wassies Chipper. In fact we have 2 teams tied in first place at the moment. Benny Deignan, Mick Conroy, Paul McGonagle and Seamus O Connell are on 90 points so far after 2 weekends, and they are joined at the top by Darragh Connolly, Mick O Hara, Alan Taaffe and Fergus Torsney. Just behind these on 88 points is the team comprising Chris Kilcullen, Aiden McGoldrick, Paul Coughlan and John Sexton, while on 86 points is the team of Ray O Grady, Fergal Kelly, Adrian McGoldrick and Gerry Teague.

Top individual scorers to date are Adrian McGoldrick with a hugely impressive 50 points from 2 outings, with Benny Deignan contributing 49 points to his teams total. However, as all four players must contribute at least 3 cards each over the 8 weeks of the tournament, it’s still all to play for, even for those teams further down the leader board. So make sure to book your tee time for next weekend and get your all your team members out playing.

Poker Night
A great night was enjoyed by all who attended the fund raising poker night held in Castle Dargan last Friday night. There were almost 50 players competing for the prize money, so thanks to everyone to came along and supported the night. Castle Dargan Golf Notes 6th October 2014

Presidents Day
A big field took to the course for Presidents Day last Sunday, where windy conditions made for a challenging day in this stroke play competition off the blue tees. The course is in magnificent condition at the moment and much credit must be given to head greenkeeper Mark Millar, and indeed to Club President Mr Dermot Fallon. And on the course, there were some mightily impressive scores at the head of the field following the days play. With 5 birdies sprinkled throughout his round, it was Jim McLoughlin (8) who took the Presidents Prize with a fantastic score of 67 nett. All the more impressive was that Jim came through the notoriously difficult finishing stretch at Castle Dargan in 1 under par for his last six holes. Niall Kearns (15) was a very close second with another great score of 68 nett. While John Treacy (10) came in third with a 71 nett.

Cup competitions
Most of the major Cup competitions are nearly completed for this year, with just the Open Fourball Cup yet to be completed. In the Darren Clarke Cup, it was an all local final this year, with Ray O Grady beating Jim McLoughlin to take the title. In the Castle Dargan Cup, Ciaran Cryan came out on top after his final match against John Treacy. While in the Council Cup it was Kevin Torsney who claimed the victory over Donal McLoughlin in their decider. The presentation of these Cups, along with the Presidents Day prizes and the 4 ball Cup, will be made at a later date in November.
