Castle Dargan Junior Academy

Junior golf at Castle Dargan Golf Club has gone from strength to strength and under the watchful eye of Paul Little, the club’s Junior Convenor, the younger members of Castle Dargan can take advantage of the excellent facilities and numerous activities in a safe and structured environment.
Paul has been a member of Castle Dargan since the club’s formation and has been involved with junior golf from the outset. A keen club golfer Paul plays off a handicap of 6 and is a fully qualified volunteer coach, licenced and insured by the Professional Golfers Association, to this end Paul has undergone full Garda vetting and extensive child protection training. Castle Dargan Golf Club has adopted The Code of Ethics for Golf for Young People as recommended by Junior Golf Ireland, the Golfing Unions of Ireland and the PGA. Parents can rest assured that their children feel safe and protected within a positive sporting atmosphere whether they are playing in competition or enjoying one of the many camps and group lessons run by Xavier Medas our resident PGA Professional.

Great success by Castle Dargan Junior Academy

Junior golf at Castle Dargan Club is going from strength to strength with recent success from a number of our junior golfers.
Castle Dargan Kenny Cup team, Daragh Connolly, James Carroll and Conor Burke brought home the clubs second pennant with a superb victory in the Connaught final on Sunday last in Strandhill. It is the second year in a row that a junior team from Castle Dargan Club has won this competition, beating off stiff competition from the best junior golfers in the province along the way. All the more impressive is the fact that this year’s team was made up of totally different players from last year, emphasising the depth of talent we have at underage level in Castle Dargan.

The following day Patrick Callaghan, Sean Carroll and Daragh Connolly competed in the U13’s Irish Open Championship in Malahide Golf Club County Dublin. The 3 Castle Dargan boys set the standard, with Patrick coming 1st, Daragh coming in 3rd and Sean taking 4th place. There is no doubt that there is a lot of talk about the Castle Dargan boys throughout the Irish golfing community. Patrick Callaghan also qualified in 2013 for the Wee Wonders in Saint Andrews, Scotland (International event) and finishing in the top 3. More recently, Patrick (3rd), Sean Carroll (6th), Luke Sherlock (7th -10 under par nett) and James Carroll (11th) all took places in the Connacht U14’s on Tuesday last. Patrick, Daragh and Luke have also qualified for the Ulster U13’s final taking place in Moyola Park Golf Club on August 26th.

Here is Patrick Callaghan (Castle Dargan) receives the boys under 13 Irish Open Trophy from Albert Lee (Honorary Secretary, Golfing Union of Ireland), while flanked by (L-R) Tommy Rusk (Captain, Malahide Golf Club), Paddy Craddock, and Pauline Chawke-Clancy (Lady Captain, Malahide Golf Club).

Female junior golfer, Maeve Kelly was selected in 2013 for the junior Connacht inter-pro’s team. Following a successful year of golf she represented Connacht at senior level in April of this year, where she acquitted herself well against other top international players through the season. Maeve has had a busy calendar of events for which she managed to practice seriously while studying for her Leaving cert. In September, Maeve will head off to Maynooth University in Co. Kildare where she has obtained a scholarship at the Padraig Harrington Golf Academy. Maeve is a very motivated and confident young woman and we are all very proud of her here at Castle Dargan.

Credit must be giving to coach PGA Professional Xavier Medas and especially to Paul Little, PGA Level 1 Coach and the junior academy parents. A well-planned season by Paul Little and their parents has had these junior golfers travel to all corners of the Ireland, to measure themselves in both regional and national events and has put Castle Dargan on the map.
Under the watchful eye of Paul Little, the club’s junior convenor, young members of Castle Dargan can take advantage of the excellent facilities and numerous activities in a safe and structured environment.

U.S. Kids Golf European Championships

Castle Dargan junior member Seán Carroll returned home from Scotland last week after competing at the junior European Championships. A finish of 35th place out of the cream of European underage golfers is a fantastic achievement for Seán, and all at Castle Dargan are very proud of his performance. As a point of note, and to give you an idea of the caliber of golfer that Seán was up against, the winner of this 3 day event was Adam Syed from the UK, who played  the entire 54 hole tournament in level par gross (remember this competition is for boys aged 11 and under!). And in second place was Reece Els from South Africa, a nephew of 3 time Major champion, Ernie Els. So well done Seán, and we’re sure you’ll be competing in many high profile  tournaments such as this in the years to come.
