Castle Dargan

Castle Dargan Golf course, members only

On Thursday evening Castle Dargan played Strokestown in the Jack O Sullivan inter club competition with three away matches and two at home. The out come was on a knife edge through out with members in constant contact between the two courses relaying up to the minute information on the many twists and turns in the matches being played. All the matches were very close and three of the matches had to play extra holes to decide the out come. At home Damien McGoldrick and David Kennedy who was drafted in at very short notice won out 3&2 while David O Donovan and Graeme Beatt won their match on the 19th. All attention was transferred to what was taking place in Strokestown where after narrow defeats to the pairings of Kevin Conlon/Merv Keegan & Adrian Barrett/Vincent Dwyer the pressure was on Chris O Neill and Ray O Grady who were playing the deciding match which was also going up the 19th In what proved to be the decisive shot of the match Ray O Grady chipped in from just off the green to leave the home support shell shocked and the eagerly awaited phone call from our roving reporter John Gethins sent the Castle Dargan followers back at base into a celebratory mode . For our young club to progress in this major competition is a great achievement and we would like to congratulate Captain Dave Donovan and his players on this brilliant and hard fought victory.

On Saturday the Cecil Ewing team again played Strokestown with three matches at home and two away. Unfortunately we could not keep the winning streak going and although the first match was won by Eugene Carroll and Wilfred Bourke 2&1 we lost our second match on the 14th and with word coming from Strokestown that our away teams were narrowly defeated the last match was called in on the 15th. This was a first inter club event for many of the Cecil Ewing team and they did themselves and the club proud. The team was Eugene Carroll/ Wilfred Bourke, Paul Little/James Kearns, Paul Mullen/John Sexton, Michael Callaghan/Fergal McLoughlin and Paul McGolligle/MartinBurke.

The club competition on Sunday was sponsored by Irish Distillers and a big field entered this competition. Although there were heavy down pours and strong gusting winds there were some decent scores recorded. The competition was won by Kevin Conlon with a score of 37points with Dermott Flynn in second after a count back. Noel Mullaney was third on 36pts and with birdies on the 11th, 15th and 16th it appears that Noel has peaked at the right time as Captains Day is next week. Paul Little put the disappointment of the Cecil Ewing defeat behind him with fourth place after a count back.

As stated next Saturday is Captains Day and a large field has already entered this competition. The groupings for the day will be made on Wednesday night and will be posted in the golf shop for Thursday morning. Any member that has not yet put his name on the time sheet must do so by Wednesday evening at the latest. This Captains Day  should be a closely fought affair as there are a number of players hitting form at present and indeed last Thursdays win in the Jack O Sullivan will give those players on the team a huge boost going into the event. We would like to wish our Captain Dermott Flynn a very successful Captains Day and we would like to acknowledge the time and hard work that Dermott has put into Castle Dargan Golf Club since he became Captain. There is no doubt that the club would not have achieved the high standards and respect it now enjoys with out Dermott’s input.
Junior coaching continues on Monday mornings at 9am and all junior members are reminded that the Captains prize for the juniors takes place on Wednesday afternoon 2nd July at 4pm. The event is open to junior members aged 7 and upwards and the entrants will be divided into different categories and will play on either the main course or on the academy. Handicaps will be allocated where necessary. More information is available by contacting the golf shop. We hope that all juniors will attend and we would like to see as many members as possible turn out to support and assist in the running of the different events on the evening. Also any members that may be interested in helping out with the juniors on Monday mornings are encouraged to come along or leave their name in the Golf shop.
The mixed foursomes continue on Friday evenings and players are asked to check at the Golf Shop for details of pairings and Tee times.

The Power Play continues every Thursday and details of the format and scoring can be found on our web site or by contacting the golf shop.
After the huge success of our last presentation evening we hope to hold a similar presentation night and Barbeque, weather permitting, on Friday 18th July and more details will follow closer to the time.
All first round matches should now be finished in the Castle Dargan cup and an update on results will follow in next weeks notes. Players are asked to arrange their second round matches and the pairings for these games are posted in the golf shop. Qualifiers for the first round of the  Darren Clarke competition should arrange their games as soon as possible as the date for completion of first round matches in this event is fast approaching.
A reminder to all members who are still in possession of tickets for the club draw that we hope to hold the draw in the next couple of weeks and therefore we would ask for one last effort to sell as many tickets as possible. Your help is greatly appreciated.

The golf shop can be contacted on 071 91 18080 or email golf@castledargan.com
