The final presentation night of 2013 took place on Sunday evening last, with 2013 Club Captain Tony Wasylocha overseeing his final official function of the year. And there was a great turnout on the evening with many important presentations to be made.
Tony first of all thanked all those, including his family, who had made it such a proud and successful year for him as Captain. Special mention was given to our three inter club teams who reached Connaught Finals this year. A presentation was made to each member of the Cecil Ewing and Jack O Sullivan teams for reaching these provincial finals, and to our Junior Kenny Cup Team who won the first ever pennant in the clubs history.
Tony went on to thank all of the clubs sponsors for their continued support throughout the year, and to all the fellow members and staff at Castle Dargan. Paul Little and Xavier Medas were given special mention for the work they have done with our very successful junior section. While Mark Millar and his team of greenkeepers were commended for the excellent work they have done to date, and the improvements they are continuing to make as we speak.
When the presentations continued, the Winter League winners were announced after the finalists had braved the elements earlier on in the day. The non-qualifiers prize was won by the father and son combination of Eugene and Sean Carroll. The runners up in the League Final were Kevin and John Torsney. While the Winter League Winners for 2013 were Michael Flynn and Ciaran Cryan.
In the Club Fourball competition, the winners of the Cup were Declan Feeney and Niall Walsh, while the runners up were Aiden McGoldrick and Thomas Kelly.
The Council Cup winner was Martin Burke, who beat his good friend Thomas Kelly in the final.
And Mr Alan Martin can now bask in the glory of having earned the title of "King of the Castle".
In the Castle Dargan Cup it was Kevin McCarthy who added to his already bulging trophy cabinet by taking the title ahead of previous winner Ray O Grady.
While in the Darren Clarke Cup, Strandhill's Dessie Timbs came through some very tough matches to eventually claim victory in a very close final against Kevin Conlon. And on the day of the presentation, special mention was also given to Dessie following his superb hole in one on the 17th in Strandhill earlier that day.
Following a great year for him on the course, Declan Feeney was crowned Golfer of the Year for 2013, just taking this title ahead of Ciaran Cryan and Kevin McCarthy.
And with music and food enjoyed by the large turnout following the presentations, a great evening was enjoyed by everyone.
On January 1st 2014, a 3-club competition will be played and is open to ladies and gents. This has been played for the past number of years and has proved very popular, so please come along and participate in our first competition of the new year.
Sincere condolences are extended to Club President Mr Dermot Fallon following the passing of his mother May. The thoughts of all the members of Castle Dargan are with Dermot, Breege and their family.

Castle Dargan Golf Notes 17th November 2013
Mark Millar and his green staff are now busier than ever with creation of new pathways and drainage around the course. The major improvements will show on the 13th, 15th and 16th where paths are being built to help the access from one green to the next tee. And the drainage, which will include some bunkers, will have a more noticeable positive impact on play, particularly on the 1st, 6th and 16th. It should be noted that the drainage work undertaken last winter has been very successful to date, with a great improvement in course conditions throughout this year.
With the Winter League currently continuing every Sunday, we can look back on a very successful 2013, with particular thanks to Pauline Lennon and Tony Wasylocha who have been great ambassadors of the club as Captains. The club spirit really came through as the Cecil Ewing and Jack O'Sullivan Team progressed to Connacht finals. And even better in the Junior Section was the victory and first Connacht pennant for the club in the Kenny Cup. Continuing on this success in the junior section was the victory of Patrick Callaghan in the U12 Connacht Championship. While Maeve Kelly, Sean Carroll, Patrick Callaghan, Darragh Connolly and James Carroll have all been selected for Connacht Coaching squads, reflecting the great work being carried out over the last number of years by Paul Little (Junior Convenor) and Xavier Medas (PGA Professional).
On the membership side, we are glad to have welcomed 25 new full members following their recent Trial Membership. And along with all the normal benefits and playing priveliges of membership at Castle Dargan, the 10% Loyalty Card for the resort, along with free golf at Moyvalley and Glasson should provide much enjoyment into the future.
Congratulations to Castle Dargan member George Kavanagh, who celebrated his 70th birthday with an honourary tournament at the club last weekend.

There was heartbreak for the Castle Dargan Cecil Ewing Team last weekend, when they were beaten in the Connaught final by the smallest of margins by Galway Bay Golf Club. Trailing 3-2 from the away leg in Galway, hopes were high that the home side could overturn the deficit in Castle Dargan and claim the first senior pennant for the club since it’s inception. And they got off to best possible start in this second leg, as captain Paul McGonagle, who formed a formidable partnership with Eugene Carroll, claimed the first point of the day with a convincing win on the 14th green. However, the matches after that were to be much closer affairs with Declan Feeney and Tony Wasylocha winning on the 18th, and Ciaran Cryan and Alan Martin losing out on the 17th. So at 4 points each, the title would be decided by the last two matches on the course, and both of these would end up going to extra holes. Martin Burke and Thomas Kelly had to battle on until the 20th hole in the horrendous weather conditions last Saturday, before they were defeated. And when Paul Coughlan and Adrian Walls lost out on the 19th hole of their match, the Galway men were able to start celebrating. While there was huge disappointment for the Castle Dargan team, especially after coming so close, Paul and his team have much to be proud about after a terrific run all the way to the final. A big thank you to Paul and all the players who gave so much time and effort to this competition, and also to all those who braved the elements to support the team on Saturday last.
Presidents Day takes place next Saturday the 14th of September. The time sheet is available in the golf shop, so make sure your name is down to play.

Jack O Sullivan team beaten in provincial final!
Our Jack O Sullivan team were beaten last Sunday following the second leg of the Connaught final by a strong Castlebar outfit. Carrying the deficit from the first leg of the final down to Castlebar last weekend, the task proved too great, and despite performing well in Mayo and taking points off the home team, the Castle Dargan men had to settle for the runners up spot this year. However, captain Kevin McCarthy and his team should have nothing but pride following their superb performances in the event this year, which brought them on such a great run all to way to the provincial decider.
Cecil Ewing team at halfway point in Connaught Final
Paul McGonagle brought his Cecil Ewing team to Galway Bay last Saturday for the first leg of their provincial final. With five matches to be played at each venue, this decider is now very much in the balance, as the first leg in Galway finished 3-2 to the Tribesmen. However, with home advantage for the second leg next Saturday, the Castle Dargan team will be hopeful of scoring the necessary points to bring the pennant to Sligo. Supporters should ensure they get out to Castle Dargan on Saturday next to follow the matches in what could be an historic day for the club. Best of luck to Paul and the team.
In this singles stableford competition sponsored by Inland Inflatable Services, Paul Little took first place with a great score of 40 points. In second place was Liam Walsh, followed by Benny Deignan in third.

Well done to both Mens teams captained by Paul McGonigle and Colm McCarthy on reaching Connacht Finals. Best of Luck.
The Kenny Cup has been won in convincing fashion by the Castle Dargan "A" team of Darragh McLoughlin, Patrick Callaghan and Sean Carroll, who have become the first inter club team in any competition to win a Connaught title for Castle Dargan since the club came into existence 6 years ago. This competition for under 17 boys, is played in Strokeplay format by teams of three, with the best two scores counting for each team. Such is the strength of the junior division in Castle Dargan at the moment, that the club actually entered three strong teams in this event, and many of these young players will still have plenty of more years of competition at this level. Indeed this stunning Kenny Cup victory is all the more remarkable considering the fact that two of the three players on the victorious team are only 12 years old.
Following their superb performance in leading the qualifiers in Ballina recently, where this A team of Darragh, Patrick and Sean shot superb scores of 66 and 68, they went into last Sundays final along with the junior teams from Westport, Athlone and Ballinasloe. However, no-one could live with the tremendous scoring of our boys in difficult conditions on the day, as Sean Carroll and Patrick Callaghan both finished with 73 nett, to post a final team total of 146, and ensure a victory by an impressive 7 clear shots. Huge congratulations from everyone at Castle Dargan goes to the boys on this fantastic victory, and indeed special mention must go to their families and parents, and also to coaches and mentors Xavier Medas and Paul Little from Castle Dargan, who have devoted so much time to helping these boys develop to this very high standard. The boys on this winning team, and indeed the players on all our other junior teams, have proven themselves a credit to these families and coaches, as their conduct both on and off the golf course has been as equally impressive as their skills with club in hand. Well done.
More success for Castle Dargan Juniors
There have been more notable performances from our junior payers in events played all over the country. Patrick Callaghan won the Irish Qualifiers of the U-12 Wee Wonders competition held at Co. Sligo GC recently and now goes on to play in the Grand Final being held at St. Andrews on 24th & 25th August.
Patrick also finished tied 6th in the Leinster U-13 Open & tied 7th in the Ulster U-13 Open. Sean Carroll finished tied 3rd in the Munster U-13 Open & tied 12th in the Ulster U-13 Open. While Darragh Connolly finished tied 6th in the Munster U-13 Open.
In a fantastic effort by our boys in the Connacht U-12 Close Championships Patrick Callaghan finished in first place in the qualifying event, Sean Carroll finished in second place, Darragh Connolly finished in 4th place, and Luke Sherlock finished in sixth position. While in the U-14 section Niall Mullen qualified for the final, with James Carroll & Fergal Collery narrowly missing the cut but still making the reserve list for the Finals which take place at Castlebar Golf Club on August 15th. Good luck to all our representatives on the day.
Special mention must also go to Luke Sherlock, who scored a brilliant hole in one on the third hole at Castle Dargan, while soundly thrashing his father on Thursday August 8th!
Jack O Sullivan team into Connaught final
While our junior players have been blazing a trail recently by bringing their Connaught title back to Castle Dargan, one of our senior teams will be hoping to emulate their success shortly, as they have qualified for the final of the Jack O Sulivan trophy, by beating Bearna Golf Club last Thursday. Kevin McCarthy left no stone unturned in his preparation for this important semi final, and with 3 matches at home, the pressure was on to deliver the necessary results. Our two away pairings made the lengthy trip to Galway to see if they could snatch a vital away point. And in terrible wet and windy conditions, they did just that as Kevin Conlon and Declan Feeney produced a great performance to claim a victory in their match. Michael Flynn and Ciaran Cryan have been a formidable combination so far in this competition but it just didn't happen for them on this occasion against a strong home pairing in Bearna. At home meanwhile, Gay Sheeran and Benny Deignan produced some superb golf to end their opponents challenge on the 14th hole. So just one more point was required, and this was duly delivered when Dermot Flynn and David Kennedy sealed the win for the Castle Dargan team, while Kevin McCarthy and Niall Kearns were called in while 1 up with one to play. The team will now face Castlebar Golf Club in the final with the the first leg taking place at Castle Dargan, and the second leg at the away venue. Lets hope the lads can bring home the first senior provincial title for the club, and we hope plenty of members will be out in force to support the team over the two legs of the final.
Cecil Ewing semi final
Best of luck to Paul McGonagle and his Cecil Ewing team, who face Claremorris in the semi final of this competition on Saturday next. All members will be most welcome to come out and support the lads in this important match as we bid to get another inter club team into a provincial decider.

4th August 3 ball scramble sponsored by Connaught Gold
Saturday's great form was carried through to Sundays scramble by Eoin Carroll, and he was ably accompanied by Eugene Carroll and Conor McDaniel. A nett score of 55 gave the lads a clear win in this event, which featured a large field of over 30 teams. In second place, it was a family affair as Kevin McCarthy, playing with his mother and father, scored an excellent nett 60. And in third place was Kevin Conlon, Ray O Grady and Peter Carr who finished with a nett 61. The nearest the pin prize was won by Chris O Neill, while Paul Little won the longest drive.

Best of luck to Kevin McCarthy and his Jack O Sullivan team, who are in action on Thursday next, the 8th of August in the Connaught Semi Final of the Jack O Sullivan Trophy. The matches start at 4pm on Thursday, so please come out to support the team in this important fixture.
Next weekends competitions are sponsored by the Embassy. Saturdays competition is a Single Stableford, while the competition on Sunday is a Golfer of the Year strokeplay event.

The next presentation night at Castle Dargan is scheduled for Friday August 9th at 9.00pm. All members are welcome to attend these presentation nights, while prizewinners must attend themselves or nominate someone to collect their prize in their absence.
Jack O Sullivan
On Thursday last, our Jack O Sullivan team had a thrilling win over Carrick on Shannon in an extremely close zone final, which means they have now qualified for the Connaught semi final against Bearna of Galway. With 3 matches away from home, and against a strong Carrick side, it was always going to be a tough task to progress any further in this competition. And despite performing admirably in the first match at home, Jim McLoughlin and Dermot Flynn succumbed to their opponents on the 17th, making the task look even more daunting. However team captain Kevin McCarthy and partner Niall Kearns secured a vital point on the 18th hole to keep the hopes alive. Over in Carrick, Michael Flynn and Ciaran Cryan took another great point for Castle Dargan, also on the 18th hole. And in another titanic battle, Gay Sheerin and Benny Deignan lost out in their match, once again on the 18th. So it was all down to the last match in Carrick, in which remarkably, Kevin Conlon and Declan Feeney, also went the distance. However, with the match all square after 18, and again after 19, it was Declan Feeney who held his nerve to sink the winning putt on the 20th hole to send the Castle Dargan men into the provincial semi final. This match is due to take place on Thursday the 8th of August with three matches at home, so please come out and support the team in this important date for the club. And well done to Kevin and all the team.
Following the great Jacko win on Thursday, Paul McGonagle and our Cecil Ewing team were also vying for a place in the provincial semi finals when they took on Ballina on Saturday last. In the two away matches, Thomas Kelly and Martin Burke battled well but went down to their opponents, while the other match featuring team captain Paul McGonagle and Eugene Carroll, was proving to be an enthralling encounter. 4 down early on in the match, they battled back to all square after 12, but then fell behind again to stand 2 down after 15. However, a storming finish meant they won 16, 17 and 18 to win the match by 1 hole. Meanwhile, back at Castle Dargan, Tony Wasylocha and Declan Feeney were producing some scintillating golf, with a birdie and 11 pars helping them to victory on the 14th hole. Ciaran Cryan and Alan Martin were 3 down with 3 to go in their fixture, but won the last three holes to take the match to extra holes. But they were delighted to be called in, only because Adrian Walls and Paul Coughlan had just clinched the vital point on the 15th hole to send Castle Dargan into the connaught semis against Claremorris. Well done to all involved on a great team performance and keep an eye on the golf notes in the coming weeks for details of the semi final match.

Junior Golf - Kenny Cup
Congratulations to our Kenny Cup ‘A’ team of Darragh McLoughlin, Sean Carroll & Patrick Callaghan who won the North Zone Qualifier in Ballina recently. This was a significant victory as there 21 teams taking part in the competition, and indeed our other two teams from Castle Dargan performed very well on the day also. The victors finished 1st with a score of 134 (best 2 of 3 cards) - 134 ~ P Callaghan (13) 66, D McLoughlin (6) 68, S Carroll (11) 76 and they now play in the Connaught Finals on Sunday 11th August in Portumna.
